It’s now confirmed, the 2017 first leg of Mashemeji Derby pitting AFC Leopards and rivals Gor Mahia will be played on Sunday at Nyayo National Stadium from 3 pm.
The match had earlier been postponed due to the unavailability of a suitable field to host the highly attended Sportpesa Premier League duel locally.
According to a statement sent to media outlets on Wednesday, Kenya Premier League CEO Jack Oguda confirmed that the encounter will be on.
“Following a successful meeting between the Kenya Premier League management and the management of Nyayo National Stadium, Kenya Premier League would like to confirm that the facility owners have agreed to exceptionally allow the AFC Leopards – Gor Mahia match to be played at the venue on Sunday, kick off 3 pm.,” read the statement.
The home team, to AFC Leopards, had concerns of not being well positioned ake adequate security arrangements of hosting the match at the Afraha Stadium in Nakuru.
Since the 2017 season kicked off, there has been a challenge of stadia with Afraha Stadium and Thika Sub County Stadium busy hosting Sportpesa Premier League matches since Nyayo National Stadium and Kasarani Stadium are under renovation.
The issue of unavailability of playing Grounds has forced the league organizer to host matches at Camp Toyoyo Grounds with already two matches played at the Jericho-based Grounds that acts as former champions home grounds of sofapaka FC.
