Taita Taveta County, Kenya: Taita Taveta County came together to commemorate the Day of the African Child (DAC 2024) at Mwatate Primary School grounds, with First Lady H.E. Rachel Ruto as the chief guest. Governor Andrew Mwadime hosted the event, which aimed to highlight the importance of education for all children in Africa.
During his speech, Governor Mwadime acknowledged the challenges of school nutrition and water shortages in various parts of the county, hindering development. He appealed to the First Lady to advocate for the second phase of the Mzima Springs water project, which was promised by President William Ruto during his visit last year.
Speaking on the theme, “Education for all children in Africa: the time is now,” the First Lady shared that Kenya has seen a significant increase in primary school enrollment, from 84.5% in 2022 to 91% in 2023. Taita Taveta County has achieved a commendable 90% enrollment rate.
The First Lady also highlighted the government’s commitment to ensuring all children receive a quality education. She mentioned that KSh 28 billion has been allocated to the Ministry of Education this year, enabling increased teacher recruitment and infrastructure upgrades.
The Day of the African Child commemorates the brave actions of school children in Soweto, South Africa, on June 16, 1976. These children protested for better education and language rights, which unfortunately led to violence. Every year on June 16th, DAC celebrates their courage and determination in defending their rights. This year’s theme, “Education for all children in Africa: the time is now,” emphasizes the urgency of providing equal educational opportunities for every child on the continent.
County Commissioner Josephine Onunga stressed the importance of community involvement in prioritizing children’s issues. She acknowledged the government’s efforts in implementing various strategies, including laws and education policies, to support children. In Taita Taveta County, grassroots engagement has resulted in a remarkable 90% enrollment rate.
Commissioner Onunga expressed gratitude for the leaders who provide bursaries to support children’s education and emphasized the collaboration between different government entities to achieve their educational goals.
The Day of the African Child celebration in Taita Taveta County was a testament to the region’s commitment to ensuring that every child has access to quality education, laying the foundation for a brighter future for all.
