Nairobi, Kenya: Parents of school-going children are advised by the Ministry of Education to register them as beneficiaries of the Social Insurance Fund (SHIF) under the new Social Health Insurance Act No. 16 of 2023 before the commencement of the third academic term.
The collaboration between the Ministry of Health, State Department for Medical Services through the Social Health Authority has developed an enhanced benefit package for Edu Afya to be covered under the Social health Insurance Fund.
According to Dr. Belio Kipsang, Principal Secretary for Education, all school going children are required to register as dependents of their parents before school opening dates set for 3rd term. The initiative of registration is a step towards realization of Universal Health in Country (UHC).
Dr. Kipsang stated that the Social Health Insurance Act was enacted on October 19th 2023 and came effective on November 22nd 2023, a mandate that every Kenyan including children to be registered with the Social Insurance Fund.
The registration can be completed through various channels including the SHA website (sha.go.ke),the helpline (*1477#) or the AfyaYangu website with instructions provided.
The PS urged education officials to disseminate the information to all parents and schools within ntheir jurisdiction, emphasizing the need to ensure all students are registered to Social Insurance Fund.
