Nairobi, Kenya; Preparations for the inaugural Council for East and central Africa Football Associations (CECAFA) women football tournament set for September in Uganda are in top gear.
The Confederation of African Football (CAF) Secretary General Nicholas Musonye is expected in Uganda’s capital Kampala on Thursday 14 August for the preliminary meetings with the football governing body Federation of Uganda Football Associations (FUFA) ahead of the tournament.
This is the first time the continental body has organized a women’s regional football tournament in bid to improve women football in the region.
The region has only three nations ranked by the global governing body FIFA; Kenya, Ethiopia and Tanzania and with tournaments like CECAFA, it will go a long way in the development of the sport.
At the same time, Rwanda national women team as confirmed participation in the tournament joining host Uganda, Kenya, Tanzania, Sudan, South Sudan and Ethiopia who had confirmed participation earlier.
Other CECAFA members like Zanzibar,Djibouti,Somalia and Eriteria have not confirmed their participation yet.
Meanwhile, Zimbabwe, Namibia and Malawi all from COSAFA have requested to take part in the tournament.
Kenya which is the only nation that will take part in the Africa Women Cup of Nations (AWCON) finals set for 19 November to third December will be using the tournament as a build for the continental show-piece
