Taita Taveta, Kenya: Governor Andrew Mwadime launched the county’s pioneering Green Space Initiative, promoting the establishment and preservation of green spaces for a healthier environment.
Situated in Voi Sub-County, this innovative park represents a crucial component of the Governor’s initiative to enhance urban green areas and aligns with the draft Forest and Landscape Restoration Implementation Plan (FOLAREP), which targets the rehabilitation of 226,420 hectares of degraded land.
Governor Mwadime highlighted the significance of the project, expressing, “I envision the establishment of fruit trees and those with medicinal properties within this green park to foster a healthier and greener Taita Taveta.”
This endeavor is a partnership with Haki Africa, led by CEO Yusuf Abubakar, who stressed the ecological advantages of planting trees. “It is crucial for ensuring clean air, as experts warn that if carbon emissions are not mitigated by 2050, we may face unbearable heat conditions on our planet,” he remarked.
Deputy Governor H.E. Christine Kilalo also emphasized the importance of the green space, asserting, “This groundbreaking initiative will enhance the aesthetic appeal of the county and will serve as a place for responsible recreational activities. We encourage leaders to actively support this initiative for the benefit of future generations.”
Grantone Mwandawiro, the County Executive Committee Member for Water, Sanitation, Environment, Climate Change, and Natural Resources, further elaborated on the project’s wider impact. “This initiative aligns with the county’s roadside tree-planting program and aims to revitalize our urban environments. Trees play a vital role in creating microclimates and are essential for combating climate change,” he stated.
