Mombasa County, Kenya: Country Club Captain Dinesh Sasan trounced more than 200 golfers to emerge the overall winner of the 2023 Sunset Golfing Society golf tournament played on Saturday, July 1, 2023, at the club’s par 71 courses in Mombasa County.
The tournament attracted 220 golfers who came from various clubs including the home Club, Seafront Mombasa Golf Club, Leisure Golf Club in Kwale, Vipingo Ridge Course in Kilifi County, and Malindi Golf Club among other clubs countrywide.
While playing off handicap 14, Captain Sasan carded 41 stable Ford points from 20 and 21 points in both the fore and back nines to claim the much-converted title. Sasan was later crowned the winner during prize giving ceremony led by Sunset Golfing Chairman Eden Odhiambo who also nicknamed him “Okello”, following his excellent performance in the tournament.
The Club Captain thanked the Sunset for holding the event at the Club and the players for attending in large numbers despite the heavy rains that swept Mombasa and almost disrupted the tournament.
He further appreciated the Club’s trainer William Kaguta gave him some mentorship which shaped his golfing skills to win the day’s tourney.
The day-long 10 holes stable Ford tournament was jointly sponsored by Stanbic Bank, Real Falcon Tyson, Liberty Insurance, AAR, and Tourism Fund.
Mombasa Golf Club’s handicap 3 Henry Kamau was the gross winner of the day after carding a four over par 75 gross. The Sunset Men Winner of 40 points was handicap 18 Ken Ndede, five points ahead of handicap 8 Gad Opiyo who was the runner up while handicap 11 Bethwel Ogwayo settled for the third slot with a score of 34 points.
Taking the Sunset Division Four men winner’s prize on 42 points was handicap Gordon Oburu.
The Sunset Lady winner handicap 36 Jaon Kanjenjo who returned a score of 39 points while handicap 30 Elizabeth Akinyi with 39 points and handicap 43 Lydia Celestine with 37 points were the runners-up and Division four Sunset Lady winners respectively.
The Nyali men’s winner prize went to handicap 27 Dan Mugambi who won with a score of 39 points while handicap 23 Edwin Kiptoo carded a countback score of 38 points after tying on the same points with third-placed handicap 26 Shafiq Makrani.
Anne Cherop playing off handicap 35 won the Nyali lady’s prize after returning 39 points, beating handicap 21 Lydia Mokaya to the runners-up slot by a single shot difference.
The day’s best score of 43 points was brought by handicap 26 Aydan Jamal who went home with the Junior prize while the Best Senior of the day with a score of 38 points was handicap 21 Jones Ndombi.
