Nairobi, Kenya: In response to the second reported case of Mpox disease in Malaba, the Ministry of Health (MoH) has significantly increased its efforts to combat the disease. This development has raised concerns on a national level.
The initial case involved an adult male truck driver who exhibited symptoms and reported a travel history from the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) where an outbreak of the disease is currently ongoing. The driver approached the Port Health screening desk at the Malaba One Stop Border Post in Busia County.
Dr. Deborah Barasa, Cabinet Secretary for Health, announced that the Ministry of Health has intensified surveillance for suspected Covid-19 cases in all counties and regions to limit the disease’s spread.
Dr. Barasa reported that out of 42 samples submitted to the laboratory for testing, 40 tested negative for the virus. In response to the situation, the Ministry of Health (MoH) has screened 426,438 travelers at various entry points to prevent further spread of the disease.
The CS emphasized that the health facilities are adequately staffed and well equipped in order to diagnose and contain Mpox.
To prevent the disease from escalating further, the Ministry recommends adherence to preventive measures such as regular hand washing with soap and water or the use of alcohol based sanitizers,practicing good hygiene, avoiding close contact with individuals exhibiting Mpox symptoms of Mpox and also avoiding sharing personal items such as towels.
Dr. Barasa emphasized the importance of exercising caution around wild animals through avoidance of the consumption of unsuspected meat and meat products from animals.
“If any one experiences or has been in contact with individuals with Mpox disease signs, should report to the nearest health facility for assessment by a qualified health professional” she said.
As the Ministry continues to monitor the situation,the CS reiterated the need to take all necessary measures to safeguard the health and safety of all Kenyans.
“Let us all be vigilant and to continue with adherence to the preventative measures to keep families and the nation safe,” she urged.
