Nairobi, Kenya: Members of Coalition for Civil Society are calling for disbandment and surcharging of the Nairobi Metropolitan Services (NMS) citing insensitivity on matters humanity.
The coalition while addressing a press conference led by their patron Henry Shitanda, threatened to sue NMS for violating human rights concerning an incident which at Pumwani maternity hospital where an expectant mother delivered on the roadside near the facility gate “This is a breach of the bill of rights and funds which were transferred from the County budget for health to NMS be returned” said Shitanda.
The Coalition is fighting for the Universal Health Coverage (UHC) and wants the Nairobi Metropolitan Services operations to be given back to Governor Sonko’s full mandate and the audit of the financial books of NMS.“For far too long now the civil society and the residents of Nairobi have complained about the systematic and methodical efforts to undermine the civilian rule at the expense of militarizing the County. For too long we have complained of a lack of transparency and accountability in the execution of functions that were transferred to the National Government” said George Bush the Spokesperson of the Civil Society Coalition.
“There’s no public participation at all and whenever money is allocated to that non-elected entity they squander money and the public don’t get an opportunity to interrogate how that money is used. Recently the COVID funds were wired directly to NMS that is contrary to the law. NMS has not accounted for even as single cent that was wired to them from the National COVID funds” added Bush.
Speaking at Makueni County where Governor Sonko had attended the burial of his Spokesperson’s sister, Ben Mulwa, rubbished NMS claims that the hospital staff were on strike and called on them to honor the pact between NMS and Nairobi county.
“We shall not entertain more abuses on the people of Nairobi and more so as leaders we pledged to fulfill our mandates by his Excellency the Governor, that’s what we want. If things can’t work let us part ways” said Mulwa.
