County Governments in Nyanza Province have been challenged to establish fish industries in Lake Victoria towns to enhance livelihoods of fishermen.
Mbita MP Hon. Millie Odhiambo says there was dire need for construction of fish industries on beaches of the lake to improve the economy among the fishing fork.
Speaking in Mbita town recently, Hon Odhiambo told governors of counties bordering the lake such as Homa Bay, Siaya, Migori and Kisumu to put place modalities of creating such industries.
“I am starting with our governor Cyprian Awiti and the message should reach all governors in the region to woo investors for establishment of fish processing plants.” Millie said.
She expressed concerns that local fishermen were getting low profits due to the cost of transportation incurred by those who buy fish from them.
“Time has come when we expect children of fishermen to acquire good education to enable them become leaders but this can only be done if the fishing sector is improved, She added.
The MP expressed optimism that the fish processing industries would help to solve the unemployment menace afflicting myriad of youths in the area.
The only processing plant in Homa Bay County collapsed a few months ago leaving fishermen at the mercy of middlemen.
That it very true and as a parson who come from this county i fully support the establishment of fish plant in our county so that unemployed youth can get job and also to improve our fish market in the region kudos Honourable Milly that is a wise idea
