Strathmore University men’s handball team defeated Kenya Defense Forces(KDF) 25-23 in the Super Cup finals over the weekend at Nyayo Stadium.
This was the second time the sides were meeting following their preliminary clash in Pool A where Strathmore won 26-23.
Strathmore’s Jack Maloba emerged the top scorer with eight goals with teammates Rashid Ingwela and Brian Wakukha managed five and four respectively.
Veteran Nixon Oyaro was the top scorer for KDF with six goals while Nicholas Ireri managed five against his name.
Commenting after the match, Strathmore coach Peter Mwathi said resilience and hard work contributed to the good performance adding that this will be a fruitful season for his charges.
“The boys have done well to lift the title. It has not been easy but I give credit to the team for a great fight picking two wins against KDF. This is an experienced side and defending champions, registering a win against them is a major milestone for us,” said Mwathi.
KDF’s team manager Sammy Mwangi blamed the referees for the loss adding that their decisions were not on point.
“The referees had a fixed mind giving our players two minutes especially in extra time. It was fair at all to field five players, especially in such a closely contested encounter.
The official added that the fourth edition of KDF league will resume end of this Month as they search for talents to beef their side for this season.
At the same time, performers were awarded over the weekend with Nairobi Water dominating the team of the season.
Nairobi Sports House award went to Super Cup winners Nairobi Water and Strathmore with the fair play warding going to Rangers HC.
Support of the year award went to Makueni Sports Director Stephen Kisoi while Paul Ondara bagged the most creative player in the men’s category.
